Reading Logs

While reading you will keep a log of your intellectual journey. Log entries will consist of scene summaries; comments on action, characters, language, themes; and your idiosyncratic reactions.

Record Log entries in a notebook.

You are in charge of your learning. You will decide what to write and in what form, but there are three rules:

    1. Clearly label each entry - pages, lines, or act and scene.
    2. Vary your kinds of entries so you have tried each kind several times.
    3. Write after each reading assignment.

Challenge yourself. Interact. Complete a minimum of three.

    1. Summarize the action of the scene.
    2. Comment on the significance of the action.
    3. Write out your questions. Has anything caused you confusion? Ask one of the characters a question - or ask me a question.
    4. Quote impressive ideas or phrasings and comment on them.
    5. Describe your reaction to an idea, character, or action.
    6. Talk about the relationships between characters, quoting words and phrases as evidence.
    7. Go inside a character and, speaking in first person, explain how the character feels.
    8. Wild card: is there something you thought about? Write it!

Always bring your Log to class.

Grades will be based on the thoughtfulness of your responses.

Enjoy the process.
